How PetMall Works

Every recommendation on PetMall begins the same way: you tell Spot what's going on, and Spot asks about your pet before suggesting anything. Age, size, how they spend their day, what's worked and what hasn't — the questions change with the problem, but the order never does. Pet first, products second.

Then Spot recommends from a small, deliberately curated catalog — three good options, not three hundred — because a shortlist you can actually reason about beats an aisle you have to scroll. Every pick arrives with its reasoning attached: why it fits your pet, what it's made of or how it works, and honestly, which pets or households it wouldn't suit. If a pick isn't right, say so — everything you tell Spot becomes context for what it suggests next.

Four things, in a fixed order. First, suitability: does this fit your pet — their size, age, and the situation you've described? Second, safety: anything about the product, your pet, or the intended use that matters for safe ownership — and whether your situation itself says "vet first, shopping later." Third, what Spot knows: the context of your conversation and, if you're signed in, the pet profiles saved to your PetSpot account. Fourth, your preferences: budget, brand feelings, what your home can accommodate.

That order is deliberate. Your preferences shape the list; they never override your pet's fit and safety. And there's a bar before any of this: products only enter the catalog when their information is detailed enough for Spot to evaluate them honestly — "the manufacturer didn't say" is a reason to leave something off the list, not a gap to recommend past.

Every product earns its place through editorial review — suitability and relevant safety considerations weighed ahead of any commercial consideration. Today, that review is editorial: we research expert resources, read manufacturer information in detail, and admit a product only when its information holds up to the evaluation bar described above. The catalog is small because the review is real.

PetMall recommends; merchants sell. When you buy, you buy on the merchant's site — the merchant is the seller of record, and their prices, shipping, returns, and warranties are theirs. Spot can compare products and explain any recommendation it's made, but for order questions, the merchant you bought from is the right door, and Spot will point you there rather than pretend otherwise. And clicking through to a merchant is never treated as a purchase — following a recommendation commits you to nothing.

One scope limit worth stating outright: prescription medications aren't available through PetMall. If your pet needs medication, your veterinarian is the best place to start.
